I should mention before reading there are a lot terms that
are used in the world of Super Smash Bros. if I do not explain something well
enough feel free to message me on any term you are stuck on. Super Smash Bros.
has always been one of my favorite games and a lot of the terms you learn while
playing at tournaments, through watching professionals play online, or going
through forums. So, if you have trouble understanding something don’t feel too
down about it, it took me years to gain the knowledge I have on this video
game. I learned everything I know from my roommate.
Meteor Smash:
I have played Super Smash
Bros. since the first one came out on the N64, but I never got as into the game
until I played the latest installment on the Wii U. A Meteor Smash is a type of attack in the Super Smash Bros. series that strikes opponents
downwards, as opposed to horizontally or upwards like most attacks. Meteor
Smashes are designed to knockout or do heavy damage to opponents at especially low damage. With the potential to take a life earlier
than usual, most traditional meteor smashes are somewhat slow to execute or
require sweet spotting. Sweet spotting is making sure you hit them with
precision and perfect timing. A lot of meteor smashing comes from good
edge-guarding. I like to pride myself on my edge-guarding abilities and it is
all about always being on the offensive. Edge-guarding is keeping your opponent
off the edge and making sure they are constantly on the defensive. Some meteor
smashes don’t KO and only knocks opponents into other hits of a combo. There is
another type of meteor smashes called unconventional meteor smashes, which can
only harm your opponents that are on the ground, making it virtually impossible
to send them down to their death.
General characteristics:
As you hit your opponents
downwards, meteor smashes cause enemies that are not in the air to instantly
bounce off the stage. This decreases the knockback received by 20% and thus making
such attacks much weaker and less reliable KO moves on enemies that are on the ground. If the
knockback is below a certain amount, it will not even give any vertical
knockback at all, and instead merely cause flinching and perhaps trips the
opponent up. Thus, only the strongest meteor smashes such as Ganondorf's down
aerial are possible KO moves to pull off with any on-stage situations.
In the previous games
before the current Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, if a Meteor Smash
connected on a target in the air, that person does not take any sort of bounce
effect and their fall will be stopped, no matter how close to the ground they
are on any surface that can stop their fall. Because of this, they can tech
from most meteor smashes with solid timing should they be able to make impact
on any surface. Teching is the ability to recover from an attack and hitting L
or R to bounce back up after hitting the ground. In Super Smash Bros. for
Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, even if the enemy is in the air, they will now bounce off
the ground regardless if they have taken a significant amount of damage for the
correct amount of knockback power, which is needed for some meteor smashes for
programmed reasons.
Meteor Canceling:
Meteor Canceling is the act of canceling the downwards
knockback of a meteor smash by jumping or using an up special after being hit. In
Melee a meteor cancel can produce a distinctive wind-cutting sound and the
character will also glow white for a little bit. Characters can meteor cancel
even if they were hit while grounded, though they must have bounced off a ceiling
and still be taking a downwards knockback to do so. Meteor
canceling does not exist in the original Super Smash Bros. for N64 and was
removed in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, so meteor smashes in both
games are very equivalent to spikes. While
some gamers claim that it still exists in a weaker form, this is just a misconception
of the smaller amounts of hitstun on meteor smashes at low percents. There is
no input window for jumping or using an up special that allows the player to
actually cancel any knockback, therefore, meteor smashes essentially act as
true spikes in Super Smash Bros. Wii U. The input window would be the time you
have to try and get a move off. A spike is an attack that sends the opponent
downwards that cannot be canceled.
How to Meteor Smash/Spike:
Note: Not all characters have a smash/spike
Captain Falcon
Down aerial - Does a stomp attack. The hitbox extends from his chest to
his feet. Has a very long duration, and is very useful if used around the edge.
Donkey Kong
Down aerial - Does a stomp attack. Donkey Kong's feet get bigger when
the attack is used, making the meteor smash have a wider hitbox.
Forward aerial - Swings his arms forward putting opponent under them
down. It has very little landing lag.
Fox
Down aerial - Does a downward spinning kick.
Jigglypuff
Down aerial - Does a downward spinning kick. The weakest meteor smash
in Smash 64.
Kirby
Down aerial - Does a downward spinning kick with strong knockback on
the final hit, being a very useful edgeguarding move.
Luigi
Down aerial - Does a downward spinning kick. Move has barely any
knockback.
Mario
Down aerial - Does a downward spinning kick that has extremely weak set
knockback. It can be used over and over to drag the opponent down so they can't
recover.
Ness
Down aerial - Does a stomp attack. Even though it has very short range,
it is very fast and is very deadly as a finishing move.
Samus
Down aerial - Swipes her arm cannon downwards in a circle. It is a very
quick meteor smash, resulting in it being very effective.
Yoshi
Down aerial – Does multiple kicks that are very fast, commonly referred
to as the Flutter Kick. Despite having barely any knockback, it has the highest
damage moves out of all attacks in Smash 64, giving 56% to the opponent if all
hits make contact.
Forward aerial - Swings
his head forward in a full head-butt motion. A very fast meteor smash with
great knockback, being reliable for early KOs.
-->
Once you practice your meteor smashing and are able to do it on a regular basis, your Smash skills will improve so much. After I learned how to meteor smash and spike my roommate and I became practically untouchable in doubles online. It does a considerable amount of damage for just one move and is the quickest way to KO your opponent.
